Beschreibung

This course reflects on how welfare is measured in a state. What measurement variables are used, what are the target variables and how are wellbeing and environmental quality taken into account? The first part of the course will discuss the structure of the commonly used welfare measure GDP (Gross Domestic Product), followed by an elaboration of why economic growth can improve or worsen environmental quality (Kuznets-Curve, Limits to Growth, Solow-Modell, etc.). Thereafter, popular alternatives for measuring welfare will be presented and students can choose one index of which they want to become a representative. Over the following weeks, students will become experts on the index and prepare a presentation. In class, they will present their index and will argue why their index could be a valid alternative to the GDP. Based on the previously learned principles, the class will reflect on how each index measures economic development, wellbeing and environmental quality.
