Worldwide, we observe critical environmental changes such as climate change, the loss of biodiversity, soil degradation and the overexploitation of the oceans. A widespread consensus exists that we need to change the way our societies and economies work to protect nature and its constituting ecosystems. What kind of change we need and how we can promote it is the big question that remains open. In this course, we will discuss whether and why a major transformation is necessary, how transformation is defined (generally and in the economics literature) and how transformation can be fostered. Throughout the seminar we will use Agriculture as a case study of sustainability transformations.

First, we will discuss the arguments in favor of significant transformation, drawing on insights from the literature on environmental challenges, well-being and environmental justice. Subsequently, we will critically examine the potential of prominent conceptual frameworks such as sustainable development, sustainability, green growth, circular economy, de-growth and decoupling. Finally, we will discuss potential pathways to foster transformations towards sustainability (e.g. through changes in our conceptualization and measurement of individual and collective well-being, through changes in values, preferences, beliefs, perceptions and/or mindsets, or through changes in institutional arrangements), barriers concerning e.g. political economic, behavioral and institutional factors that could emerge and strategies to overcome them.
