My work focuses on analyzing and facilitating processes by which actors, whether individuals or organizations, develop and enforce institutional arrangements for the sustainable management of their shared natural resources.
In particular, I am interested in how different perspectives and preferences are weighed at different levels and stages of the policy process to achieve desired environmental, social, economic, institutional, and political outcomes. Ultimately, this analysis aims to provide information for designing policies, political processes, and polycentric systems to effectively promote and sustain individual and collective for socially desirable outcomes in natural resource management.
My research has drawn on insights from economic history, political economy, political science (especially institutional analysis), resource and environmental economics, and the behavioral sciences (especially behavioral economics and social psychology). I have used a variety of qualitative and quantitative methods, such as participant and non-participant observation, semi-structured interviews with key informants, systematic comparative case studies, economic experiments, and regression analysis to investigate and decipher the effects and mechanisms associated with particular policy and process characteristics.
My dissertation ("Participatory Interventions for Pro-Social and Collective Action in Natural Resource Management. An institutional and behavioral approach") is a contribution to this goal. In my dissertation, I reviewed the literature on participatory governance, collective action, and prosocial behavior, and reported, analyzed, and discussed the results of a series of economic experiments in the laboratory and in the field on the potential of participatory methods for pro-social action.
Research interests
- Institutional and behavioural analysis of policies, policy processes and governance systems in the context of natural resource governance and management
- Participatory approaches
Methods
- Qualitative methods (e.g. non-participant observation, semi-structured interviews with key informants, the comparative method)
- Quantitative methods (e.g. regression analysis)
- (Economic) experiments
Current Research Projects
Since 01.05.2022 I am dedicated to a new DFG-funded project on "Participatory Visioning for Collective Action in Natural Resource Management.” It is part of a new cluster of research in the field on how participatory approaches to agriculture and natural resource management should best be designed, and what specific methods are most effective. In the new project, I am investigating with Stefanie Engel the participatory visioning (PVB) approach and its implications for the use of natural resources. Field experiments with farmers in Colombia are planned. The duration of the project is two years.
Previous research projects
- In the context of this PhD research project, S. Engel, AK. Koessler and I researched the effects and mechanisms of policy interventions for environmental and natural resource management.
- With Juan Camilo Cárdenas, Stefanie Engel, and Ann-Kathrin Koessler. "Prosocial Behavior and Collective Action for Water Management in Peru. A participatory intervention based on economic games and economic experiments." Funded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation for the Alexander von Humboldt Professorship in Environmental Economics at the University of Osnabrück (Germany). Complementary funding for the implementation of the planned multi-actor workshops was provided primarily by the GIZ Environmental Program in Peru (Pro Ambiente), the MERESE-FIDA project, and the Institute of Nature, Earth and Energy (INTE) at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP). The Nor Yauyos Cochas Protected Landscape Area Management Committee (RPNYC), L+1, the Steering Committee for the Creation of the Cañete River Water Resources Council, and CELEPSA provided additional logistical support for the workshops we conducted in the Lima region. Video of the multi-actor workshop (Spanish).
- In 2015, together with Juan Camilo Cárdenas: Consensus Building and Citizen Monitoring in Santander, funded by the Addressing Biodiversity - Social Conflict in Latin America (ABC-LA) program of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Previous activities in this context were either supported or funded by IBM, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development (MADS), and the Alexander von Humboldt Research Institute for Biological Resources in Colombia. Video of the economic games used in the project (by Juan Camilo Cardenas and Uniandes; Spanish).
- Between 2012 and 2013, together with Juan Camilo Cárdenas and Angelika Rettberg: a study of the political decision-making process in mining in Colombia between the end of the 20th and the 21st century. This project was funded by the Vice-Presidency for Research and the Vice-Dean for Research and Graduate Studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the Universidad de los Andes.
- Between 2012 and 2013, with Angelika Rettberg: a study of the relationship between gold mining, armed conflict and crime in Colombia in the 21st century. Century. Funded by the Center for Studies on Security and Drugs (CESED), Universidad de los Andes.
