Exams and theses

Foreword

(Excerpt from the examination regulations):

"The [...] [final paper] should show that the candidate is able to work independently on a defined scientific problem [...] within a specified period of time. The topic and task of the [...] [thesis] must correspond to the purpose of the examination and be such that they can be worked on from the collection of material to the final version of the text of the thesis in the time allowed. The type of task and the assignment must be fixed when the topic is issued."

Question:

Where can I find information about the exams?

You can find all information about the examinations and dates in the HISinOne or the examination regulations. If you have any questions, please contact the examination office.

Question:

When should I get in touch if I am interested in writing a thesis with you?

You should contact a possible supervisor several weeks before you wish to start.

Question:

I would like to write a thesis (Bachelor, Master, Diploma) with you. What is the procedure?

Please note the allocation procedure for theses of the Department of Business and Economics. First register via the registration procedure. Students who have been selected for a thesis at the department, please note the following information:

You are also welcome to contact us in advance to discuss whether the topics we offer suit you. In the overview of current theses you can already get a first impression of possible topics.

The further procedure is as follows:

  1. Contact the supervisor (even before the official award procedure).
  2. Determine the topic (either choose a topic from the database or define a new topic in dialogue with the supervisor).
  3. Create a rough outline up to the second hierarchical level, write a (keyword-like) synopsis for each (sub-)chapter (What is done in which chapter?) and validate it with the supervisor.
  4. Register the thesis at the examination office (forms are available at the examination office) and start the processing time (excerpt from the examination regulations: "At the candidate's request, the chairperson of the examination board ensures that the candidate receives a topic in good time. The topic is issued by the chairperson of the examination committee [...]. With the issue of the topic, the chairperson of the examination committee appoints the examiner who has set the topic as the first examiner and the second examiner.").
  5. The thesis must be submitted on time (see also "What must be submitted?"). Exceptions, e.g. the extension of the processing time due to illness, can be found in the respective examination regulations.
  6. After submission of the final paper, the expert opinion is prepared promptly on the basis of the form for the assessment of seminar papers and final papers.
  7. After the grade has been announced, the report can be viewed at the examination office. Printed copies of the thesis are not returned.

    Question:

    Are programming skills required?

Programming skills are not usually required to work on our topics. Theses that require programming knowledge contain the keywords "programming", "prototype" or "implementation" in the title. Furthermore, the number of theses requiring programming skills is comparatively small. Nevertheless, if interested, theses with a focus on pure programming work can be supervised and written at our department.

    Question:

    Which theses are supervised?

Usually, there is sufficient capacity available to supervise students from all disciplines/departments. You can find an overview of available theses per staff member under Team. Regarding the choice of topic, please also refer to the question "Are own topic suggestions possible? (see below).

    Question:

    Are own topic suggestions possible?

Your own suggestions for topics are very welcome. Theses in cooperation with practice partners can also be proposed at any time (see below "Are theses in cooperation with practice partners possible?"). Furthermore, it is not mandatory that the topic of the thesis is oriented towards the current research topics of the subject area, although this is desirable.

    Question:

Are theses in cooperation with practice partners possible?

Theses in cooperation with practice partners are definitely possible. In addition to the available topics in the thesis database that are written in cooperation with a practice partner, you can approach us at any time with a potential topic or practice partner.

    Question:

Is it possible to work in a group?

    Excerpt from the examination regulations:

"The final paper can be written in the form of a group paper if the topic is suitable; the suitability is determined by the examiner. The contribution of the individual candidate to be assessed as an examination performance must be clearly distinguishable on the basis of the specification of sections, page numbers or other objective criteria and must be assessable in its own right. [...]"

Details can be found in the respective examination regulations.

    Question:

What must be submitted when finishing the thesis?

Two printed copies of the thesis must be submitted to the examination office. Furthermore, the thesis in digital form (DOC/DOCX and PDF), the digitally available literature sources used and all other artefacts created in the context of the thesis (e.g. illustrations in Microsoft Visio or source code) should be submitted in digital form, e.g. by BigMail or USB stick or mail or on a CD. Note: The final year student will NOT receive the submitted copies of the thesis back.

Details can be found in the respective examination regulations.

    Question:

    How are the grades awarded?

Grades are awarded transparently on the basis of a freely available grading scheme. What needs to be taken into account for the individual points listed is described, among other things, in the instructions for writing academic papers and the tips for academic papers (ZIP file, password on request).

The documents can all be found in the Downloads section under Theses.
